Jon Trachtman and Leslie Arthur are out of work musicians who room together in New York City. To save money, Jon has been filing tax returns listing the pair as married. The day of reckoning comes when the Internal Revenue Service informs the “couple” they’re going to be investigated. Leslie masquerades as a housewife, aided by Jon’s fiancée, Kate. Complicating matters further, Leslie and Kate are having an affair behind Jon’s back, Jon’s mother drops in unexpectedly to meet her son’s fiancée, and Leslie’s ex-girlfriend shows up demanding to know why Leslie has changed and won’t see her anymore. 6:00 pm to 7:30 pm

Join us for a much-requested evening book club. We will be reading a wide variety of books new and old. Register for the event to let us know you are reading with us!

September’s book is Wellness by Nathan Hill

Wellness is a poignant and witty novel about marriage, the often baffling pursuit of health and happiness, and the stories that bind us together. From the gritty 1990s Chicago art scene to a suburbia of detox diets and home-renovation hysteria, Wellness reimagines the love story with a healthy dose of insight, irony, and heart.

When Jack and Elizabeth meet as college students in the 1990s, the two quickly join forces and hold on tight, each eager to claim a place in Chicago’s thriving underground art scene with an appreciative kindred spirit. Fast-forward twenty years to married life, and alongside the challenges of parenting, they encounter cults disguised as mindfulness support groups, Facebook wars, and something called Love Potion Number Nine.

For the first time, Jack and Elizabeth struggle to recognize each other, and the no-longer-youthful dreamers are forced to face their demons, from unfulfilled career ambitions to painful childhood memories of their own dysfunctional families. In the process, Jack and Elizabeth must undertake separate, personal excavations, or risk losing the best thing in their lives: each other.

Southeast Health Foundation is leading a community-wide initiative to develop a HeartSafe Program for the region. Starting at home, the Southeast Health Foundation is partnering with the City of Dothan, the Dothan Fire Department and Dothan Area Chamber of Commerce to form an advisory committee to establish a HeartSafe program in Houston County. The goal of this partnership is the reduction of deaths from Sudden Cardiac Arrest (SCA) occurring in the community.

The program focuses on four lifesaving elements, which improve survival for cardiac arrest victims:

  1. Early Identification – Promoting awareness of the signs and symptoms of sudden cardiac arrest, to encourage bystanders to call 9-1-1 immediately.
  2. Early CPR – Increasing the number of individuals trained in Hands-only CPR, which increases the chance of effective defibrillation.
  3. Early Defibrillation – Increasing access to and awareness of automated external defibrillators (AED) throughout the community, which is a critical link for survival.
  4. EMS Intervention – Basic and advanced care provided by EMS is critical. Steps 1-3 by the public aid EMS and provide the best chance for a cardiac arrest victim’s survival.

Through the initiative, workplaces, campuses and communities in Houston County will be encouraged to become recognized as HeartSafe. To be eligible, an organization must complete an application and meet certain criteria, which includes ensuring an adequate number of individuals are trained in hands-only CPR and that automated external defibrillators (AEDs) available within a certain distance.

As a major contributor and program supporter of the HeartSafe initiative, the Dothan Fire Department will host the first in a series of hands-only CPR training classes on Saturday, April 30th at the new Wiregrass Public Safety Center. For more information about the event, please call the Southeast Health Foundation or check out our Facebook page.

About Sudden Cardiac Arrest:

SCA is the leading cause of death in the United States, claiming more than 300,000 lives annually. Approximately 95 percent of SCA victims die before they reach a hospital or receive medical attention.

SCA generally occurs without warning. Once the SCA victim collapses, he or she has about five minutes to receive an AED shock to reset the heart’s rhythm. Without the AED shock the chance of surviving decreases by 10 percent every minute that life saving measures are not initiated (early, identification and activation, early CPR and early defibrillation).

If you are interested in becoming a HeartSafe Workplace/Campus or would like more information about HeartSafe, please contact the Southeast Health Foundation at sehealthfoundation@southeasthealth.org or call 334-673-4150.

4:00 pm to 9:00 pm

308 N St Andrews St

On Saturday, October 19, the Southeast Health Foundation will welcome cancer survivors and supporters back to The Plant in downtown Dothan for the 16th annual Champions of Hope! The event creates a one-of-a-kind opportunity for people who have faced or are facing cancer to connect as a community and celebrate milestones with family, friends, physicians, and care providers who support them every step of the way.

The celebration is open to everyone whose life has been touched by cancer, regardless of where they were treated. Let’s #LOVEDOTHAN and come together as a community to support each other. Highlights include the non-competitive Molly’s Mile walk and a chip-timed 5K or 10K throughout historic downtown Dothan, special commemorative event t-shirts, and finisher medals for all participants, roving entertainment, activities for the family, local vendors, and inspiring speakers. Raising more than one million dollars since its inception in 2008, proceeds from Champions of Hope help expand cancer services, programs, and patient support in our community.

Raising more than one million dollars since its inception in 2008, proceeds from Champions of Hope help expand cancer services, programs, and patient support in our community.

This is the searing story of real kids in real situations with real consequences seen through the eyes of young Ponyboy. Territorial battles between the have-it-made rich kids — the Socs — and Ponyboy’s tough, underprivileged “greaser” family and friends are just a part of life. But even in the midst of urban gang warfare, somehow Ponyboy can’t forget a short poem that speaks to their fragile young lives. This heroic story of belonging, friendship, and maintaining hope in the face of struggle is a powerful reminder of what young people encounter every day.
Includes mature themes, violence, suggestions of both alcohol use and sexual activity. Recommended for ages 12+ at family’s discretion.

WMA presents The Pumpkin Patch, a free family art festival on Saturday, October 26th from 10-2 pm at the museum in the Civic Center parking lot in downtown Dothan. Enjoy WMA’s giant pumpkin patch, with hands-on artmaking stations throughout. At this event, everyone can create and take home up to five handmade works of art. “I refuse to be put in a box,” says Tucker Wetmore. “That’s because I’m making my own lane.” Yes, with the monumental success the budding Country superstar has already seen in 2024 alone, it’s safe to say Wetmore’s lane is one in which Country music fans across the globe are eager to join him. On the heels of two mega-streaming debut singles, “Wine Into Whiskey” and “Wind Up Missin’ You,” both of which hit the Billboard Hot 100, Wetmore, who was also named Billboard’s May Country Rookie of the Month, is well on the way to becoming one of the year’s certified breakout stars. “It definitely caught me off guard how many people those songs resonated with,” the Washington-born singer-songwriter says of the pair of songs, which combined have already amassed more than 100 million streams on Spotify alone. To date, Wetmore has notched nearly a quarter of a billion career streams. “I knew they were special but I could never have guessed they’d have this kind of weight behind them,” he adds of the two massive singles.

8:30 am to 12:00 pm

SEACT Student Company’s Godspell JR. Competition Cut & Student Showcase

909 S Saint Andrews St, Dothan, AL, United States, Alabama 36301

7:00 pm to 10:00 pm

A group of disciples help Jesus Christ tell different parables by using a wide variety of games, storytelling techniques and a hefty dose of comic timing. An eclectic blend of songs, ranging in style from pop to vaudeville, are employed as the story of Jesus’ life dances across the stage. Dissolving hauntingly into the Last Supper and the Crucifixion, Jesus’ messages of kindness, tolerance and love come vibrantly to life.

Our competition team will take this 20-minute cut of Godspell JR. to the National Performing Arts Festival in Orlando, FL. Come see our most advanced students in this vocally and choreographically impressive ensemble piece and enjoy individual student performances from a range of musical theatre favorites.

Catered dinner service will precede the performance for those who pre-purchase a dinner package (performance tickets included). Please email billyh@seact.com if you or your organization would like to sponsor a table to help fund student scholarships. Dinner service begins at 6:00 PM

Performance-only tickets will be available for purchase through the SEACT website.

Johnny Rawls –
Johnny Rawls is a soul blues legend with too many accolades to mention here. With a career spanning more than 50 years, he’s done it all. He’s an internationally recognized recording artist, music producer, and songwriter who tours extensively nationally and internationally.

The Blues Music Awards, Blues Blast Awards, Living Blues Awards, and the W. C. Handy Awards have all acknowledged Johnny with 26 Nominations and 9 Blues Awards, including Soul Blues Album of the Year and Soul Blues Artist of the Year. Living Blues Magazine described him as a “soul-blues renaissance man” when he was featured on the cover in 2002. Johnny is honored to be mentioned on two markers along the Mississippi Blues Trail – one in Hattiesburg, MS marking the Hi-Hat Club, and another in Rocklin ME marking the migration of blues from Mississippi to Maine.

Jimmy Wooten –
Hailing from Shreveport, Louisiana, Jimmy Wooten is a seasoned musician who has toured the past fifteen years with bands internationally, but, with the recent release of his fourteen-track debut album, Collision Course, he is solidifying himself as a true songsmith. With a sound rooted in rock, country, blues, and soul, his music takes you on an auditory journey that you won’t soon forget.

As the Civil Rights movement is brewing, a controversial children’s book about a black rabbit marrying a white rabbit stirs the passions of a segregationist State Senator and a no-nonsense State Librarian in 1959 Montgomery, Alabama. A contrasting story of childhood friends—an African American man and a white woman of privilege, reunited in adulthood—provides private counterpoint to the public events swirling in the state capital. Political foes, star-crossed lovers, and one feisty children’s author inhabit the same page in a Deep South of the imagination that brims with humor, heartbreak, and hope. Inspired by true events!
