The main creative force behind Blakgraz is Tom. He wrote and recorded “Now Is So Beautiful” with Valarie Borman in 2000, and had it reach the No. 1 spot for downloaded songs on MP3.com, beating out Alanis Morrisette and Blink 182. Tom has had regional success with songwriting in various projects including Shoot the Moon which saw Top 10 positioning on Reverbnation in 2007 for several months and national, regional, and college radio airplay. While this event is free and open to the public, we ask that you keep a few things in mind so that this is an enjoyable experience for our participants:

Everyone who participates needs to be registered in their name so we can plan appropriately and have enough sets available. If you are not registered, you will not be permitted inside the programming room.

This event is only for ages 10 and up and we’ll be building various sets at this event. The library offers a different Lego Club monthly for patrons who are not old enough for this event.

All building sets will be provided and will remain at the library when completed.

Some of our sets are basic and some are more detailed. Because of this, we’ve set aside three hours for the event. Don’t feel pressured to stay the entire time, we know life can really be lifing sometimes.

No experience is required and there is no pressure for skill, just bring your creativity and willingness to have fun.

Speed Puzzling Competition (Ages 13 to Over 19)

6:00 pm to 7:30 pm

Registration for this event will be open from April 8, 2025 @ 10:00am to April 29, 2025 @ 3:00pm.

Think you are good at jigsaw puzzles? Why not test those skills at our first ever Speed Puzzling Competition at our Main Library! Compete as a group of 2 to 4 people to see which team can finish first. When registering, only one person should register for their entire team. The registered person will be the contact in case we need to contact your team. Please indicate how many people will be on your team by answering the question at registration. Each team will receive an identical puzzle to complete , and all participants will start at the same time. The first team to finish within the allotted time will each get their own puzzle sorting tray set and bragging rights.

General Rules:

Teams of 2–4 people are allowed to participate. When registering, only one person should register for their entire team. The registered person will be the contact in case we need to contact your team. Please indicate how many people will be on your team by answering the question at registration.

Each team will be given an identical 500-piece puzzle and will have their own table to work on their puzzle. You must remain in your assigned space. You may be disqualified if you interfere with the progress of another team or competitor.

Only participants over 13 years old are accepted, unless they are accompanied by a parent or guardian who is competing with them as a team.

Until the staff member indicates the start of the competition and starts the timer, the participants cannot move or touch the jigsaw puzzle boxes that are on the table.

All the tables will be numbered and assigned to teams. The doors will open at 5:30 pm and the clock will start at 6:00 pm. Any group or competitor who arrives late will still be allowed to compete, but will not be given any additional time.

There will be no scheduled breaks, but competitors are allowed to leave the table at any time while the competition continues. However, they will not be given any additional time nor will their time pause while they are away.

No food or drinks will be allowed on the puzzle tables.

The official timer will be visible at the front of the room, but participants are free to bring their own timers if they wish.

Participants will only be able to assemble the jigsaw puzzle on their assigned table and within the competition venue.

Headphones are allowed as long as the volume is kept low enough that it does not disturb other participants.

Groups who have finished their puzzles will be allowed to remain in the competition area only as long as they do not disrupt the other competitors.

Prizes will only be awarded to the team that correctly finishes first. In the event that no teams finish before the time limit, the winner will be the one who has correctly placed the largest number of pieces.

All the jigsaw puzzles used in the competitions are the property of the participants once the competition is finished.

Spectators will be allowed to watch the competition as long as they do not disrupt the competitors.

The common thread among the trio, other than their DNA, is their masterful three-part harmonies which blend together to create one singular, almost angelic, voice. The Castellows’ craft as songwriters is as robust as their voices, which is evident across the trio’s debut EP, A Little Goes A Long Way, releasing February 9, 2024. The band wrote/co-wrote six of the seven songs that make up the project, with the promise of much more music to come. The band began turning heads of music industry insiders in January 2023. When spring arrived, The Castellows had signed a record deal with Warner Music Nashville & Warner Records, collectively. Wasting no time on pleasantries, The Castellows immediately got to work writing, recording, and performing live. Tapping veteran producer Trina Shoemaker (Sheryl Crow, Nanci Griffith, Queens of the Stone Age), the first fruits of labor to be harvested from 2023 is the debut A Little Goes A Long Way. At the Do Art Productions Comic Book Workshop, we will explore the different languages of comics, from the eyes to body posture to the actual language within speech bubbles. This innovative performance draws inspiration from the verses of Ecclesiastes 3:1-8, exploring the cyclical nature of life and the profound human experiences of love, loss, transformation, and resilience.

Through a fusion of contemporary, modern, and dance theatre styles, Alabama Dance Works’ professional company will bring to life the tension between opposites—creation and destruction, mourning and dancing, silence and expression. The production treats these verses as poetic reflections on the passage of time and the beauty found in each season of life.

Audiences will be captivated by the show’s unique structure, which begins with the final moments of the performance and flows into the exploration of grief and rebirth. Dancers will embody the emotional depth of each chosen verse, from the heavy, sustained movement of mourning to the joyful and expressive energy of dance. The performance concludes with a powerful meditation on Ecclesiastes 3:10-11, celebrating the beauty that comes with the passage of time and the eternal nature of the human spirit.

Mermaid Day

Join us for a special Mermaid Day at Walton Park Recreation Center, where children ages 14 and under can enjoy a magical experience filled with themed activities. The event will include a mermaid makeover station, light refreshments, and mermaid-themed crafts. Children will also have the unique opportunity to swim with two mermaids in the facility’s pool. Admission is $22 per child and includes entry for up to two adult chaperones. Mermaid Day will take place from 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.

Following Mermaid Day, participants ages 6 and older are invited to attend Mermaid School, held from 2:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. This special session is led by a professional mermaid instructor and offers participants the chance to learn how to swim using a mermaid tail. The instructor will guide participants through various activities designed to build confidence and enhance underwater skills in a fun and engaging way. The cost for Mermaid School is $100 per participant, which includes admission to Mermaid Day earlier in the day.

Born just outside of Austin, Texas, Ty grew up on a cattle ranch owned by his family for more than six generations. He clung on to music as a kid and never let go, obsessing over an expansive range of artists like Stevie Ray Vaughan, Jimi Hendrix, Bill Withers, and Otis Redding to Chris Stapleton and George Strait. Devoting every waking minute to writing songs and playing music, he gave up baseball and football and opted for homeschooling in order to wholeheartedly pursue his dream. During 2023, he made waves with his debut single “Tie That Binds,” gaining traction organically and generating over 11 million Spotify streams. On its heels, “Drinkin’ Alone” exploded with over 26 million Spotify streams and counting. Between packing houses in his home state and sharing the stage with Willie Nelson, he has performed countless sold out shows across the states and wrapped up dates on Wade Bowen and Randy Rogers Band’s Hold My Beer Tour before embarking on his headline run.

Teen RECHARGE!

3:30 pm to 5:00 pm

A place for teens (13-19) to hang out, mess around and geek out with others their age. S.T.E.A.M.-based activities such as robotics, 3D pens, crafts, computer coding, art, video games, etc. will be available to all at no charge. Registration is not required each week, but our space is limited to the first 25 teens!

Teen RECHARGE will be available most Mondays from 3:30-5:00 PM at the Main Library.

Although we ask that no parent participate, we do require a parent or guardian’s name and contact.

This week-long camp will inspire young minds to explore their creativity and the world of art. This week-long camp invites children to become curators, artists, and art critics as they create, display, and engage with a diverse range of artistic works. Students will have a chance to see the behind the scenes work that goes into curating and installing a show. They will also have the opportunity to tour our permanent collection and experience works that are not on display.

Studio 126: An After School Art Program

4-5:30 p.m.
Ages: 13-16
Price: $5 weekly; $15 per month
Want a space to hang out with friends and create art together? Looking for a place to work on your own art projects? With our new after school program, Studio 126 will allow teens the space to explore art at their own pace! Teens will be able to create and experiment with different art materials while learning new techniques and meeting new friends (or hanging with old ones). Whether you bring your own works in progress, or create something entirely new, we will provide all the art supplies you’ll need! No previous art experience is required.
This program is weekly and requires in-person or online registration. Legal guardians must come inside the museum to check in/check out their teens.

Toddler Hour! on Toddler Thursdays

Every 4th Thursday of the month

Toddler Hour offers an engaging experience each month, on the fourth Thursday, from 9:00 to 10:00 a.m.

Guests from as young as 14 months are invited to participate in a children’s book reading and explorable activities in one of our museum galleries. This experience allows families to explore WMA’s galleries before they open to the public—reducing crowds, noise, and overstimulation.

After the reading, guests can explore the museum at their own pace. We will have Scavenger Hunts and discussion questions available for families to enjoy together.

Monthly Puzzle Swap

10:00 am to 11:00 am

If you enjoy jigsaw puzzles please join us at the Main Library for a monthly puzzle swap on the last Friday of the month! Bring a puzzle and take a puzzle, or two, or three! Puzzles of various sizes are welcome for trade (100, 200, 300, 500, 1000 pieces or more!) You may bring as many as you choose to trade and each trade is up to the individuals.

If the event falls on a closed holiday it will be the Friday before.

Registration requested. Puzzles can be used but must be in good condition and include all pieces. Trades are made at each patron’s discretion and are not required upon attendance. If these dates do not work for you please email Ashley at abynum@dhcls.org for suggestions!
