“Journaling” shouldn’t be a scary word. It should look the way YOU want it to look. It’s the only thing ever that is all about you.

In 2013, my first cousin and I uncovered 16 years of our King grandmother’s diary, 25 years after her death. She recorded both of our births. I think no excuse is acceptable for not writing a few things down to be left behind.

Hummingbird Banding Program at Dothan Area Botanical Gardens

Dothan Area Botanical Gardens

10:00 am to 12:00 pm

5130 Headland Ave

Here is your chance to see a hummingbird up close!  Join master hummingbird bander Sarah Driver to learn more about these amazing and beautiful birds at Dothan Area Botanical Gardens (DABG) as she will attempt to capture and band local hummingbirds.  Workshops will be held the 2nd Saturday May thru September.

The program will begin at 10:00am in the Walden Farmhouse.  Registration is necessary and the cost is $10 for the general public or $5 for Garden members.  Spaces are limited.

Driver has been banding hummingbirds for over 35 years and learned the trade from her great uncle, James Johnson, a master bander.  Banding hummingbirds is a true skill because the birds legs are so tiny.  There are less than 200 licensed hummingbird banders in the entire United States.  Driver and her husband are new residents of Dothan.

Although 14 different species of hummingbird have been spotted in Alabama, the Ruby-Throated hummingbird is the most common. Hummingbirds generally migrate to Central America during the winter, but some do not.  Their wingbeat is an amazing 20 to 80 beats per second and their flying abilities are well- known.  Hummingbirds can fly backwards, forward, straight up or straight down, and even backwards.  During their daily activity, hummingbirds burn a tremendous amount of calories and usually feed about 4 or 5 times an hour.

Driver will return each month through September to present additional hummingbird banding programs.  Other program dates are August 10 and September 14th. All programs begin at 10am and pre-registration is necessary.

The Dothan Area Botanical Gardens includes over 20 different “pocket gardens” including a daylily garden, hydrangea garden, Asian garden, herb garden, demonstration garden and more.  Other features of the 46-acre garden include “Wings of Wonder” Butterfly House, a wedding garden, gazebo, picnic pavilion, children’s playground and the 8,000 sq ft. Ralph & Carolyn Smith Botanical Center.

The Dothan Area Botanical Gardens is located at 5130 Headland Ave. in Dothan.  The pet-friendly (must be on a leash) facility is open from 9am-6pm.  Butterfly House hours are 10am-4pm. For more information, please contact the garden office at 334-793-3224 or visit www.dabg.com

1:00 pm to 5:00 pm

100 Public Safety Way

Southeast Health Foundation is leading a community-wide initiative to develop a HeartSafe Program for the region. Starting at home, the Southeast Health Foundation is partnering with the City of Dothan, the Dothan Fire Department and Dothan Area Chamber of Commerce to form an advisory committee to establish a HeartSafe program in Houston County. The goal of this partnership is the reduction of deaths from Sudden Cardiac Arrest (SCA) occurring in the community.

The program focuses on four lifesaving elements, which improve survival for cardiac arrest victims:

  1. Early Identification – Promoting awareness of the signs and symptoms of sudden cardiac arrest, to encourage bystanders to call 9-1-1 immediately.
  2. Early CPR – Increasing the number of individuals trained in Hands-only CPR, which increases the chance of effective defibrillation.
  3. Early Defibrillation – Increasing access to and awareness of automated external defibrillators (AED) throughout the community, which is a critical link for survival.
  4. EMS Intervention – Basic and advanced care provided by EMS is critical. Steps 1-3 by the public aid EMS and provide the best chance for a cardiac arrest victim’s survival.

Through the initiative, workplaces, campuses and communities in Houston County will be encouraged to become recognized as HeartSafe. To be eligible, an organization must complete an application and meet certain criteria, which includes ensuring an adequate number of individuals are trained in hands-only CPR and that automated external defibrillators (AEDs) available within a certain distance.

As a major contributor and program supporter of the HeartSafe initiative, the Dothan Fire Department will host the first in a series of hands-only CPR training classes on Saturday, April 30th at the new Wiregrass Public Safety Center. For more information about the event, please call the Southeast Health Foundation or check out our Facebook page.

About Sudden Cardiac Arrest:

SCA is the leading cause of death in the United States, claiming more than 300,000 lives annually. Approximately 95 percent of SCA victims die before they reach a hospital or receive medical attention.

SCA generally occurs without warning. Once the SCA victim collapses, he or she has about five minutes to receive an AED shock to reset the heart’s rhythm. Without the AED shock the chance of surviving decreases by 10 percent every minute that life saving measures are not initiated (early, identification and activation, early CPR and early defibrillation).

If you are interested in becoming a HeartSafe Workplace/Campus or would like more information about HeartSafe, please contact the Southeast Health Foundation at sehealthfoundation@southeasthealth.org or call 334-673-4150.

Miracle Berry Tasting

445 N Oates St (Main Branch), Dothan, AL, United States, Alabama 36303

6:00 pm to 7:30 pm

Turn sour to sweet with just a berry! Miracle berry taste testing will include eating and drinking things that are usually tart or sour.

Synsapalum Dulcificum, or Miracle Berries, also known as Miracle Fruit, Miraculous Fruit, or lididi berries, are a healthy, natural fruit native to West Africa. Miracle berries contain an active ingredient called miraculin, which changes the taste of sour foods like lemon and lime, into sweet temporarily without adding sugar. So you can eat a lemon like an orange, drink lemon juice as if it’s lemonade (without adding ANY sugar), or have a grapefruit for breakfast without sprinkling sugar on top. The effect usually lasts between 15 minutes to 2 hours depending on the individual.

Join us on a tasting spree and rate your experience with each taste to see if these berries work for you!

The IMPACT Project is in its 4th year and is designed to provide an opportunity for performing artists to create, perform and promote their original artistic works in a safe and creative environment. It is our hope that the IMPACT Project will invite its audiences to broaden their perspectives as to what art can be and allow our performers to impact the lives of its audiences in a profound way through dance, theatre, music, poetry, movement and storytelling.

We invite all performance groups or individuals from all over the Southeast to join us. All artists who wish to participate must apply on our website, to be considered for the project. The process is simple and $15.00 to register. The application will provide the ADW Board of Directors an understanding of the nature of the work each artist wishes to perform. A video submission is recommended to understand the caliber of each artist or company’s works. The applications are considered by the meaning and description of the work as well as the concept that is being presented. Professional, collegiate, freelance artists and student groups are all invited to submit. Submissions close July 1st!

Alabama Dance Works is a 501c-3 non-profit professional dance company whose mission is to transform the lives of it’s students and audiences through high-quality dance education, performance, and community engagement. With this event, it is truly the community connection we seek to build through our inspiring performances and it is completely free to the public. Contributions will be accepted at the event.

In order to keep ADW’s commitment to education at the forefront, master workshop classes in dance and theatre arts will be offered Saturday July 27th. A detailed master class listing will be made available in July.

Other program dates are September 14th.

An Evening with Paul McDonald

Mural City Coffee Company

7:00 pm to 10:00 pm

Live at the Opera presents a special evening at Mural City Coffee Company with singer-songwriter Paul McDonald.

An Alabama native and rising star, Paul McDonald’s voice is immediately recognizable and impossible to ignore. Often compared to legends like Rod Stewart and Bob Dylan, the poetic story-driven narratives and deeply catchy hooks in his music are delivered by a raspy yet refined voice reminiscent of another era that demands to be heard right now. He pulls off the rare feat of being a poet, visual artist, songwriter, adamant performer, and a powerful vocalist. Paul’s hope is to spread peace, love, and unity through his music. Connection & community through song. Paul visits the Wiregrass as part of his summer 2024 tour and in support of his most recent album, “Modern Hearts”.

This event is a 21 and over event. Wine and beverages will be available for guest purchase.

7:30 pm to 10:30 pm

An afternoon of family fun, food, games and bluegrass music. An open jam begins at Noon

Born in Grundy, VA., currently resides in Belcher, KY. Kevin Prater’s love of music began at age four, with the encouragement of his Uncle, Boone Estep. He quickly mastered the Guitar, Mandolin, Bass and Banjo. At age seven Kevin had his first professional job playing in a touring band. By age nine Kevin had college credits in guitar. When Kevin was eleven he formed “Elkhorn Grass” with life long friend David Adkins. The band toured regionally for eleven years. On graduation day they packed up, moved to Tennessee to work at Dollywood for Ms. Dolly Parton. Kevin remained there for three years. In 1998, his longtime friend Jason Moore arranged for Kevin to audition for the bluegrass legend, James King, beginning his worldwide travels.

Now in his 44th year, Turnberry Recording artist, Kevin Praters talents have taken him to 24 countries and 49 states. Kevin has shared the stage with many legends of bluegrass including The Osborne Brothers, Doyle Lawson & Quick Silver, Charlie Waller & The Country Gentleman. He has traveled millions of miles as part of many great bands including Mark Phillips & Third Generation, Jerry Williamson & Red Wing, Melvin Goins & Windy Mountain, The Bluegrass Brothers (earning a nomination as “Banjo Player of the Year”) and for twelve years as the highly respected sideman and mandolin player of The James King Band. During his reign with King he was part of two “Album of the Year”, a “Song of the Year” from SPBGMA and “Recorded Event of the Year” from IBMA. Kevin has been recognized by the House of Representatives of the great state of Kentucky twice, for Protecting and Promoting Kentucky’s treasured Bluegrass Music. In addition, Kevin Has twice been declared a Kentucky Colonel.
For the past 16 years Kevin has led The Kevin Prater Band throughout the USA and Canada. They have released six CDs, most recently “Red Rocking Chair” recorded at Kevin’s own studio, Sound Makers in Belcher, KY. Kevin has recorded over 1,000 projects in his 30 plus years operating Sound Makers. Having just signed a deal with Turnberry Records on California for an all original recording. January 2024 will be the release of their first solo, with the full CD to release in Spring 2024.
Kevin could not create the bands unique sound without the help of his multi-talented band. Hailing from West Virginia, Mallory Hindman on fiddle. Lennie Centers, son of Legendary Roy Lee Centers on guitar, from Eastern, KY. Bailey Moore, of Virginia. He is the great nephew of Allen Mills or Lost & Found Bluegrass and nephew of the late, great bassist Jason Moore. On mandolin, Dalton Smith of Alderson, WV. All members of The Kevin Prater Band contribute vocally and they all play multiple instruments, assuring no two shows are ever the same. In addition to traditional bluegrass the band also delivers classic country, grassed up vintage rock, original tunes and bluegrass gospel.

Join us for Dothan’s Annual Witches Ride 2024, a fantastic event presented by the Junior League of the Wiregrass, MOG, and Thalian, all supporting the Southeast Alabama Child Advocacy Center and Exchange Center!

Gather your friends, wear your witch attire, and hop on your swiftest broomstick to ride with us at Solomon Park on Sunday, October 5th.

Our festivities will kick off with a parade around Solomon Park, during which we’ll delight the kids by throwing out Halloween treats along the way. The enchantment continues with a lively park party featuring delectable food, engaging games, enticing prizes, and captivating entertainment that promises enjoyment for the entire family.

This event welcomes girls ages 12 YEARS OR OLDER to participate in the Witches Ride. The festivities following the ride, including the after party, are open to FOR ALL AGES, ensuring a spellbinding experience for EVERYONE.

Feel free to interpret “broomsticks” creatively – from walking shoes to scooters, bikes, golf carts, or any other mode of transport that lets you take flight!

Please note: Participants in the parade must be 12 years or older.

On Saturday, October 19, the Southeast Health Foundation will welcome cancer survivors and supporters back to The Plant in downtown Dothan for the 16th annual Champions of Hope! The event creates a one-of-a-kind opportunity for people who have faced or are facing cancer to connect as a community and celebrate milestones with family, friends, physicians, and care providers who support them every step of the way.

The celebration is open to everyone whose life has been touched by cancer, regardless of where they were treated. Let’s #LOVEDOTHAN and come together as a community to support each other. Highlights include the non-competitive Molly’s Mile walk and a chip-timed 5K or 10K throughout historic downtown Dothan, special commemorative event t-shirts, and finisher medals for all participants, roving entertainment, activities for the family, local vendors, and inspiring speakers. Raising more than one million dollars since its inception in 2008, proceeds from Champions of Hope help expand cancer services, programs, and patient support in our community.
