Empty Bowls Dothan Bowl Sale and Luncheon

11:00 am to 1:00 pm

The Empty Bowls Dothan project helps fight hunger in the Wiregrass. Bowls created by the community will be sold at the Cultural Arts Center from 11 a.m. until 1 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 7. Attendees will receive a meal of soup, bread, and water with the purchase of a handmade ceramic bowl. A variety of bowls will be for sale, priced as marked.
The majority of the bowl-making sessions are held at the Cultural Art Center to offer the community “hands on” access to its benefits. Five Star Credit Union sponsors Empty Bowls Dothan and provides all the supplies needed for the project. The Cultural Arts Center houses the all of the bowl-making events and the fundraiser luncheon. The project’s founding potter, Lynn Koning, offers pottery classes at the CAC, and a variety of other arts classes are offered at the center as well.

ABOUT TAB BENOIT:
Tab Benoit is a 4x Grammy nominated singer, songwriter and guitarist who has built a remarkable 30+ year career on the foundation of his gritty and soulful Delta swamp blues, acquiring a devoted legion of fans along the way, as well as 5 Blues Music Awards, including BB King Entertainer of the Year (twice) and an induction into The Louisiana Music Hall of Fame.

After a 13-year hiatus, Tab is back with his latest effort, I Hear Thunder, on his own label, Whiskey Bayou Records. The new album was his first #1 in the Billboard charts in over 30 years. Read more about it in Billboard here. Benoit’s 2013 release, Medicine, was co-produced with Anders Osborne for Concord International, and garnered three Blues Music Awards. Following this notable success, Benoit took a step away from music, taking a 13-year sabbatical from recording and entering a period of creative exile.

Tab’s accomplishments as a musician are matched only by his devotion to the environmental health of his native Louisiana wetlands. The notoriety achieved by his success provided him with a mouthpiece to promote his growing concern for the Louisiana Wetlands and coastal erosion from the region he calls home. Benoit is the founder and driving force behind Voice of the Wetlands, an organization working to preserve the coastal waters of his home state. In 2010, he received the Governor’s Award for Conservationist of the Year from the Louisiana Wildlife Federation. Benoit has also starred in the iMax motion picture Hurricane on the Bayou, a documentary of Hurricane Katrina’s effects and a call to protect and restore the Wetlands.

ABOUT SAMANTHA FISH:
One of the most formidable guitarists of her generation, Samantha Fish deals in her own unmatched brand of bravado, bringing both mind-blowing power and extraordinary emotionality to everything she creates. Since first introducing the world to her larger-than-life talent, the multi-award-winning festival headliner has built a triumphant career whose latest milestones include earning a Grammy nomination for Death Wish Blues (her 2023 collaboration with rocker Jesse Dayton) and opening for The Rolling Stones on their final 2024 U.S. tour date. Fish’s first-ever album recorded with her touring band, Paper Doll takes its title from the first song the Kansas City-bred musician penned for the LP: a raw yet reflective battle cry that perfectly encapsulates the album’s spirit of unapologetic defiance. “That song’s a feminist anthem in a way—but then again, every song’s a feminist anthem when you’re a woman writing from your own experience,” says Fish. “It’s about rebelling against other people’s expectations of who you’re supposed to be, which feels pretty relevant for the times we’re living in right now.”

Recorded at The Orb in Austin and Savannah Studios in L.A., Paper Doll marks the latest entry in an uncompromising and endlessly adventurous catalog that’s found her working with luminaries like Jon Spencer of Jon Spencer Blues Explosion as well as Luther Dickinson (co-founder of North Mississippi Allstars and former member of the Black Crowes). Come wander the galleries, have a drink at the cash bar, and take in the art on view. You might even have a chance to speak with one of the exhibiting artists or try your hand at an in-gallery activity! Art After Hours is FREE for members and $5 for not-yet members. Toddler Hour on Toddler Thursdays!

Every 4th Thursday of the month

Toddler Hour offers an engaging experience each month, on the fourth Thursday, from 9:00 to 10:00 a.m.

Guests from as young as 14 months are invited to participate in a children’s book reading and explorable activities in one of our museum galleries. This experience allows families to explore WMA’s galleries before they open to the public—reducing crowds, noise, and <a href="http://overstimulation.

If you enjoy jigsaw puzzles please join us at the Main Library for a monthly puzzle swap on the last Friday of the month! Bring a puzzle and take a puzzle, or two, or three!
